A negative stain result does not exclude the possibility of infection. A false negative may occur due to: • Sampling error • Low number of fungal cells in the sample • Slow growing fungal organisms • Delay in sample transport & delivery • The use of antifungal medication If the test does not show any fungus, the doctor may perform further investigations.
Collect Corneal or skin scrapings, hair, nail clippings, respiratory specimens, or unground tissue.
