Anti Myelin Antibodies, Serum
1Day(s)Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) antibodies are present in sensory nerve disease due to monoclonal IgM gammopathy. These antibodies interfere with processes of myelination, myelin maintenance or axon-Schwann cell interaction. Detection of IgM autoantibody against myelin associated glycoprotein suggests active demyelination in peripheral neuropathy. The possiblity of MAG antibody involvement in a suspected neuropathy may essentially be ruled out if a MAG IgM negative result is obtained. This test is useful in the diagnosis of Paraproteinaemic Polyneuropathies (PPN). Moderately ELEVATED levels have been reported in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), inflammatory neuropathies, and motor neurone diseases.
