Anti-dsDNA antibodies are the best recognized autoantibodies found in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which is a systemic autoimmune connective tissue disorder involving inflammation and damage to a variety of different tissues and organs. Anti-dsDNA antibodies are considered responsible for much of the kidney disease and renal manifestations that occur in SLE, and as well, the development of lupus nephritis. This test can be used to monitor disease development and response to therapy. RISING ds-DNA antibodies suggest an increased risk of progressive SLE disease. Anti-dsDNA antibodies are also associated with rheumatoid arthritis, sclerodema, Raynaud phenomenon, myositis, Grave’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and in autoimmune hepatitis.
