Reference Range

Vitamin H (Biotin) is an essential water-soluble B vitamin. It acts as a coenzyme for carboxylation reactions essential to fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Biotin is also indicated for healthy hair and skin, healthy sweat glands, nerve tissue, and bone marrow, and assisting with muscle pain. Sources of biotin include: beans, egg yolks, liver, soy, and yeast. DEFICIENCY can arise in certain hereditary metabolic disorders, in malnutrition, in patients on non-supplemented parenteral alimentation and in people who consume large amounts of raw egg. Although a shortage of biotin is very rare, it can happen and may result in hair loss, dry scaly skin, cracking in the corners of the mouth (called cheilitis), swollen and painful tongue that is magenta in color (glossitis), dry eyes, loss of appetite, fatigue, insomnia, and depression.
