Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a protein synthesized by endothelial cells that is involved in the breakdown of blood clots. It is one of the physiological activators of plasminogen and is important in fibrinolysis. tPA converts plasminogen to plasmin, which subsequently degrades fibrin (and fibrinogen), forming soluble fibrin degradation products. Therefore, this test may be helpful in detecting disorders of the fibrinolytic system. tPA levels are INCREASED in a wide variety of different pathological conditions including respiratory distress, cancer, myocardial infarction, shock, septicemia and serious liver damage. Defective t-PA release from the endothelium compromises the fibrinolytic process and is therefore a thrombotic risk factor. See also Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1, Plasma
