Sperm Wash, (IUI), Seminal Fluid

1 Day(s)

Reference Range

Sperm washing is a procedure used to prepare sperm for use in intrauterine insemination (IUI), which is the placement of sperm in the uterus for the purpose of enhancing the chance for pregnancy. Preparation for an IUI involves separation of the sperm from the seminal fluid. The semen sample must be washed free of debris, white blood cells, and prostaglandins, which can cause the uterus to contract. The processing also removes dead sperm and concentrates the sperm into a small volume that can easily be handled by the uterus. This procedure is usually done in cases of unexplained infertility, male-factor infertility, women with endometriosis, or men with antisperm antibodies.
