Reference Range

The sickling test is used to detect, diagnose, and confirm sickle cell anemia and to identify those who may have sickle cell trait. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder that leads to the production of an abnormal hemoglobin called hemoglobin S (Hb S). It is perfomed by mixing a blood sample with a chemical that reduces the amount of oxygen it carries; inappropriate changes in the shape of red blood cells (sickle/crescent shape) is then detected.
