Salicylate, Serum

1 Day(s)

Reference Range

Salicylates are any group of analgesics, or painkilling drugs, that are derivatives of salicylic acid. The best known is acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin). It has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and uricosuric activity (at high doses) and inhibits platelet aggregation at low doses. Salicylate poisoning can cause vomiting, tinnitus, confusion, hyperthermia, respiratory alkalosis, metabolic acidosis, and multiple organ failure. Measurement of Salicylate level is used to monitor the dose of the drug in order to avoid toxic effects.

Special Requirements

Optimal sampling time is 1-3 Hrs after dosage. Time to reach peak serum concentration is 1-2 Hrs afterdose administration.
