Mumps Virus Antibodies, IgG, Serum

1Day(s)

Reference Range

Mumps is an enveloped, single stranded RNA virus belonging to the family paramyxoviridae. It is a highly contagious viral disease spread in airborne droplet nuclei. It has a long incubation time (20 days) and mainly affects children, causing painful swelling of one or both parotid glands. It can also involve other organs, including the sexual glands (orchitis and ovaritis after puberty), the pancreas (pancreatitis) and the central nervous system (lymphocytic meningitis and meningoencephalitis). Unproductive and asymptomatic infections can occur. A POSITIVE titer of IgG antibodies, in the absence of current clinical symptoms, is indicative of protective immunity.
