Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is a member of the herpesviridae family with an affinity for B lymphocytes. EBV causes acute infections, including a mild, usually asymptomatic infection in children, an acute pharyngitis in 10 to 15 year olds, and a classical infectious mononucleosis in young adults. Symptoms may include fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, an enlarged spleen, and sometimes an enlarged liver. This test is useful in the diagnosis of EBV infections. Antibody response to VCA antigen (Viral Capsid Antigen) is stronger than the response to other viral antigens. The presence of VCA-specific IgG antibodies, with the absence of IgM antibodies, indicates past exposure to the virus.
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate from cells ASAP
