Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), Serum

2 Day(s)

Reference Range

Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is an antioxidant that is also a cofactor for mitochondrial ATP generation. It is a component of the electron transport chain and participates in aerobic cellular respiration, generating energy in the form of ATP; therefore, it is mostly present in organs with the highest energy requirements such as the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas and spleen. CoQ10 DEFICIENCY may be caused by insufficient dietary CoQ10, impairment in CoQ10 biosynthesis, excessive utilization of CoQ10 by the body, or any combination of the three. It seems to be lower in older people and in people with chronic diseases, such as cardiac problems, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and muscular dystrophies.
