Bicarbonate, Serum

1 Day(s)

Reference Range

Bicarbonate (HCO3) is a chemical that keeps the pH of blood from becoming too acidic or too basic. It is considered as the body’s main buffer against an acid attack. This test is usually ordered as part of an electrolyte panel to detect, evaluate, and monitor electrolyte imbalances, and to help monitor conditions such as kidney disease, hypertension, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment for known imbalances. INCREASED bicarbonate level is associated with chronic respiratory failure, metabolic alkalosis, severe vomiting, lung diseases, Cushing’s syndrome, and Conn’s syndrome. DECREASED levels are associated with metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, renal insufficiency, severe liver failure, Addison’s disease, and certain forms of poisoning.
