Biolab Medical Laboratory confirmed the detection of the first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Jordan, through the laboratory's detecting center for mutated strains of the virus. Head of the research team, Dr. Issa Abu Dayyeh, confirmed that the two detected Omicron cases were identified through the protocol for monitoring mutant variants at the airport and in Amman, and both cases went through three stages of verification, the last of which was conducting a genetic sequence examination, which enabled us to decrypt the whole genetic code of the virus, in addition to uploading the genetic codes of the two Omicron cases to the global platform GISAID for the purpose of sharing it with experts around the world, making them the first Omicron genetic codes from the Arab world to be published on that platform.
Dr. Amid Abdelnour, founder, and CEO of Biolab Medical Laboratory, expressed his pride in the research team that has proven throughout the pandemic that it is fully capable of decrypting the genetic codes of the Coronavirus, analyze its data, and publish it on the global platform with unparalleled speed and efficiency, which enabled Jordan to be the first Arab country to detect the Omicron variant and publish its genetic code globally. Dr. Abdelnour also stated that coordination is underway with government agencies to isolate infected and exposed individuals to limit the spread of the new variant in the Kingdom.
Dr. Amid Abdelnour added that Biolab will continue to cooperate with different authorities to expand its database, in order to help control the spread of the virus in the future. He also stressed that since week one of the disease’s emergence, Biolab team has been working tirelessly day and night to conduct accurate high-quality Covid-19 tests and detect positive and negative cases, in close coordination and cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Health to take the necessary action regarding detected cases.
